Early History of the Marche of Alderford, by Iustinos Tekton

This History was compiled by Maistor Iustinos Tekton, founding Seneschal of the group. It's just one person's version of what happened. Some of this is from the official Seneschal files, and the rest from memory. If I've missed anyone or made a mistake, I apologize &emdash; please bring it to my attention and I'll make it right! The SCA names and titles are given in their current form as of this writing; quite a few of those mentioned had different SCA names (or none) at the time of the events described, and most did not have any Award of Arms and were therefore not "Lord" or "Lady" at the time. I did it this way so that those who don't know the individuals personally will not be confused by having the same person called different things on this one page.

The Marche of Alderford was founded at an organizing meeting on September 27, 1994. Lady Milica of Varna and Lord Iustinos Tekton actually started the planning of the meeting, with help from Lord Quentin MacGowan and Lady Ailith Mackintosh on some of the presentations. A total of about twenty people attended the meeting, of whom about seven were SCA members at the time. Among those attending were Lady Francesca de Onorati, Lady Meredydd verch Rhys, and several others who are still active in the group today. The meeting was held in the backroom of the Louisville Public Library, and was it ever crowded! We never dared hope to have that many people show up...but who's complaining?

The whole idea was something that a few friends had kicked around for years, but about which no one had really gotten serious. Then at Pennsic War XXIII, Iustinos and Milica were approached by Lady Catriona and Dame Alys Katherine, both long-time SCA members and officers, who had heard somehow that "there are these two people in Canton who want to form a new group." You might say they talked us into getting the ball rolling. Milica really did most of the up-front work, sending out flyers to libraries all over the county and calling lots of friends. There was an existing science fiction literary club, called "Harry" (believe it or not!) in the Canton/Louisville area. Many of the people from Harry were at the this Alderford organizing meeting and many are still active.

Shortly before the date of the meeting, Milica received a phone call from Eva Maria Szabo (Eva Stevenson), who had seen one of the flyers in her local library. Eva, her husband Eric, and several friends from the Alliance area had been talking about forming a group for a while but had not done anything official yet. They asked if they could participate in this group, and of course this was welcomed. Eva couldn't make the first several meetings, but Eric became a founding member of the new group and was our founding Exchequer and Knights Marshal.

Iustinos conducted the meeting, with much help from others who had some familiarity with the SCA (most attendees did not). Milica introduced the purpose and history of the SCA; Ailith talked about arts and sciences and about events; and Quentin discussed how we recreate combat safely. We were also privileged to have Patraic O'Docartaigh, then Seneschal of the March of Gwyntarian, present, and he helped to elaborate on some discussion points and invited people to visit their meetings as well. It was agreed by most of the attendees that the idea of a local chapter was worth pursuing, and the organizers got to work on setting things up.

The second meeting, held October 11, 1994, took place at Stark State College (then called Stark Technical College) in North Canton. There were eighteen people present, including some who weren't at the organizing meeting. The group chose a slate of acting officers, including:

• Eric Stevenson (Etienne du Valmonte) as Knights Marshal

As of this writing, all of the above except Eric Stevenson are still active in Alderford, though the office holders have changed since then.

The group next considered names that the group could call itself. The list included Black Alder, Fierampweld, March of the Stone Steps, March of the Many Helms, Skraelling Cross, Trois Villes, Glamorgan Keep, Alderford, and Schwarzerle. The top three (Alderford, Skraelling Cross, and Schwarzerle) were selected by ballot and a final decision was tabled until the next meeting. It is interesting to note that "Alderford" was on the initial list but was not chosen as the group's name at the next meeting! Instead, members decided to bring in the name "Winterbeere" which was not even on the initial selection list and this was selected. Unfortunately, in early 1995 we were informed by a Herald of great reknown that "Winterbeere" (which meant "winter berry") might sound pretty but it wouldn't pass muster as an authentic place name. So we regrouped and selected "Alderford" for submission as our permanent name. An ironic turn of fate this was, indeed!

We submitted paperwork and became a "proto-incipient" group a couple of months later. During the spring of 1995, we accepted the March of Gwyntarian, a long-established group in the Akron/Kent area, as our sponsor and it was during 1995 that Alderford began to host demos and to talk about an event of our own.

Finally in February 1996 Alderford hosted its first event, under the sponsorship of Gwyntarian. A Masque of Courtly Love was held at Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton, with Ailith and Milica as co-Autocrats. We had hoped to attract one hundred people and got only eighty-five, but we considered the event successful because the people who did come all told us they enjoyed themselves.

Later that month, we were informed by Regional Seneschal Lady Meadhbh that we had been granted Incipient status at a recent Curia meeting. The group was on its way toward full status recognition. On June 7, Anno Societatis XXII (1997), Their Royal Majesties Edmund and Kateryn granted our petition for full status as a local branch.

In Memorium

Kerry Malcolm, known in the SCA as Francois Enbalance du Bruffs, passed away in February of 1995. An accident at his home compounded with a pre-existing skull injury to result in a fatal brain hemorrhage. Kerry had been active with the group since the September 27, 1994 meeting, and had been involved in the SCA in other areas for many years prior to that.

Featured Speaker: Mistress Drea di Pelligrini

Mistress Drea di Pelligrini, mka Drea Leed, has studied historic costume for a number of years, specializing in 16th century costume and textile history.

She has presented papers at the International Congress of Medieval Studies and elsewhere on such topics as Flemish dress, Masque dress, and dyestuffs of the 15th and 16th centuries, and has lectured for several re-enactment groups and renaissance faires on the topic of 16th century costume.

Drea's publications include her Compleat Anachronist "Elizabethan Underpinnings" and her book The Well-Dress'd Peasant, as well as articles in Renaissance Magazine and Tournaments Illuminated. She has an upcoming publication in Medieval Dress and Textiles on fabric cleaning in the Renaissance, and she will be speaking at the upcoming Medieval Congress in Leeds on tailor's bills in 16th century England.

Drea's current areas of research include Renaissance dyeing technology, the 16th century tailoring industry, and an ongoing transcription and catalog of Queen Elizabeth's wardrobe accounts.

Drea currently lives in Springfield, OH with her husband and cat, where she works as a programmer to support her research and fabric habits.

In addition to the classes, the Known World Costume Symposium will feature a number of other activities of interest.

Fashion Show

Saturday evening there will be a fashion show that will be videotaped and copies will be available for purchase $10 on CD or on video. These copies will be mailed after the event.

Portrait Photography

Photographer Angelina Oberlin will be on site taking photos against medieval backgrounds for an additional charge.

Symposium Proceedings

Proceedings will be available for $15 print or $10 on CD. To receive the proceedings on site you must pre-register. If they are purchased at the gate they will be mailed 2 weeks after the event.

Field Trip

There will be a field trip for those interested to the Kent State Fashion Museum on Sunday for a charge of $10 per person. Interested parties will be bused to Kent. Pre-registration is required as space will be limited.

Other Event Facilities

A free Internet lounge will be available Saturday for all guests. Also, for the convenience of our Royal visitors, there will be a royalty room available.

	Baron Conal O'hAirt This class will look quickly at the three types of pattens worn during the 12th to 15th centuries in Europe. Then we will turn our attention to hinged wooden pattens If you bring a pair of turn shoes (or similar types of shoes) you can leave the class with a pattern to make your own pattens with a few simple-to-use tools. We will walk though the process of making a pair of pattens, doing some of the work on-site where possible. 10 person limit (auditing class is possible) no class fee.

Sunday 2:00 p.m. 1 hr	Fillets, Wimples, Barbettes, and Veils — 13th and 14th century women's headwear
	Mistress Arwenna of Kelsey, OP This course includes a look at some of the variations of headcoverings worn with cotehardies and surcoats with a focus on fabric fillets. Two methods of stiffening fabric fillets will be shown (without resorting to plastic!). Types of materials, both period and modern equivalents, will be discussed, and patterns will be available to copy.
(Time TBD) 1 hr	Late 15th Century Venitian Cork Chopines
	Asa Gormsdottir "Chopine" or chapiney is a European term for a range of heeled shoes variously called zoccoli, pianelli and calcagnetti. This class teaches about the chopines and how they were made.

North Canton, Ohio, is conveniently accessible by highway or by air.

Driving Directions

Take your best route to Interstate 77 ("I-77") in Ohio, and head for North Canton (located in Stark County).

From the North

Take I-77 South to Exit 111 (Canal Fulton/Portage Road). Turn right at the light at the bottom of the exit. Go to the far left lane and continue into the far left turning lane at the first light. This will put you on Strip Avenue. Turn left and continue through five traffic lights. Just after the fifth light (Dressler Road) there is a small street to the left called Metro Circle. Turn to the left here, and the hotel is on the left. (There is a large WCCV sign with a smaller Four Points Sheraton sign at the road.)

From the South

Take I-77 North to exit 109A (Belden Village). The exit will turn into Belden Village Street. Go straight through two traffic lights and turn right at the third light (Dressler Road). Go through three lights. After the third light there is a small street to the right called Metro Circle. Turn right here, and the hotel is on the left. (At this street there is a large WCCV sign with a small Four Points Sheraton sign.)

Airline Travel

The nearest airport is the Akron-Canton Regional Airport (code CAK, 10 minutes from event site). Although it is not large, it sometimes can be cheaper to fly into than the larger (but more distant) Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (code CLE, 60 minutes from event site). The best advice is to check fares to both CAK and CLE.

A shuttle is available between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Akron-Canton Regional Airport. The shuttle costs US$18 per person, each direction. There is a free shuttle from the Akron-Canton Airport to the hotel. Please check with the hotel about arrangements to use it.

Staff Biographies

THL Francesca de Onorati (Norma Jean Storms)

CE, APF, CW, AoA (Co-Autocrat and Exchequer)

Norma has always had an interest in things Medieval and was very happy to discover the SCA in 1993 at the Leonardo Da Vinci event in the March of the Debatable Lands. Norma was so excited about the SCA that she helped set up the chairs for the first meeting of the Marche of Alderford in the Oaken Region of the Midrealm in 1994.

Francesca was Alderford's first Herald and then remained Deputy Herald for several more years. She has been a Deputy Seneschal under 4 different Seneschals from 1996 to the present. She has also been Alderford's MOAS for the past 3 years. Francesca has been the Head Cook for six out of the seven annual Masques of Courtly Love (1996-2002). This year Francesca was the Steward for Masque of Courtly Love VII. Francesca has also been the Head Cook at the second (1997) and third (2000) coronations of Sir Edmund of Hertford, and his Lady Kateryn Bronwyn. She has helped out in many other feast kitchens through out her SCA history. Francesca is also the steward for the Local Cook's Guild which is comprised of the four groups the Barony of Brendoken (1999-2004).

Francesca has taught at local events and at the Cook's Guild for a number of years. In March 2003 she was made a Companion of the Order of the Evergreen for her work in Cooking, costuming and research.

Norma has been a librarian for 24 years and has worked in a variety of school and public libraries first in New York State and then in Ohio. She has been responsible for libraries and AV departments in several high schools and has also been a Cataloger in a public library for 8 years. Currently she is a Reference Librarian and in charge of collection development for the Reference Department at the Stark County District Library in Canton, OH.

Lady Genovefa da Terranova (Holly M. Taylor)

AoA, APF (Co-Autocrat)

Genovefa joined Alderford only 3 months after its first meeting, in December 1994, and has been very active since that time. She was the group's Chatelaine and demo coordinator for 2 years and served as a deputy seneschal for one year. She then took the post of group's Chancellor of the Exchequer. She has held the office of Exchequer for Alderford for 3 1/2 years and has also held the office of Exchequer for the proposed Barony of Brendoken for 3 1/2 years. The records she keeps include not only those of Brendoken and Alderford, but also the funds for Rivenvale, as Alderford is currently their sponsor.

Genovefa is not new to event organization or stewardship. She was Co-Autocrat for Masque of Courtly Love II, Masque of Courtly Love III, Winding Down From War, and Rangvaldr and Arabella's Tournament of Chivalry. She has worked at nearly every event Alderford has been involved with in one capacity or another. She served as Autocrat-Assistant at Septemberfest and has frequently ran and worked at troll and various other positions as needed at events. Genovefa has also been coordinator of the Pegasus Farms Demo.

Genovefa is a member of the Brendoken Sewing Club, The Alderford Performer's Guild, and the local Cook's Guild.

Holly is a children's librarian at the Stark County District Library (SCDL) and has worked there for 4 years. She is the editor of the SCDL branch of local SEIU 1199's bimonthly newsletter and is an active member of the Health Benefits Committee for SCDL. She also does volunteer book-keeping for a local daycare, Pleasant Day Child Care Center. She is a very organized and efficient individual.

Baroness Catriona nicHugh Mclaey (Marti Livingstone)

Having taught elementary school for thirty years, Marti Livingstone, has a lot of experience in organizing chaos. She was the technology coordinator at her school and in that position created, filmed and edited many documentaries of school functions, retirement gifts, and informational short subjects. Once the digital camera was in her hands, no one was safe from her. THL Catriona has been in the SCA since the mid 1980's. She has served as a local, baronial and regional seneschal. She is the currently the chronicler for the Marche of Alderford in Canton, Ohio.

Lord Hugh the Silent (Hugh Storms)

Hugh the Silent has been a member of the SCA since 1993 and help found the Marche of Alderford in the Middle Kingdom in 1994. He has been Alderford's Exchequer (4 years), and it's Seneschal (3 years). Hugh has been the Gate Keeper/Troll for Alderford for 4 out of its 7 yearly event, the Masque of Courtly Love. He was Head Gate Keeper for the second (1997) and third (2000) Coronations of Sir Edmund of Hertford and his Lady, Kateryn Brownwen, and also for the 1999 Tournament of Chivalry for Sir Rangvaldr Jonsson and his Lady, Arabella Silvermane. Hugh was also Head Gate Keeper in 2003 for Northern Oaken Regional A&S Faire.

Hugh Storms is the Chief Design Engineer for E.T.S. Schaefer in Macedonia, OH, where he spends most of his days designing furnace linings for high temperature industries.

An SCA member since 1989, Katarina is a member of the Marche of Gwyntarian in the Akron/Kent araa.

Professional advertising/PR copywriter since 1989. MA, Business and Organizational Communications (University of Akron, 1991), with a concentration on event planning/production for small businesses and non-profits.

Currently teaching Public Relations Writing at the University of Akron, and as a consulting copywriter for The Creative Group, part of the Robert Half Consulting agencies.

In the SCA, holder of AoA, APF, ODH, OW, OE, all Middle Kingdom service or arts awards. Former seneschal, Marche of Gwyntarian. Former baronial chronicler, Barony of the Cleftlands. Co-autocrat for coronations for Edmund and Kateryn II and III. Solo autocrat, Oaken A&S, 1995.

Current responsibilities in the local and regional SCA include: Ohio Mart Public demonstration coordinator and group contact for Marche of Gwyntarian and the forming Barony of Brendoken.

Our Masque will feature a Murder Mystery Intrigue, Classes, a Market where you’ll shop until you drop, and a Feast which will Delight your Palate and Warm your Insides. In addition, we are pleased to be able to offer Armoured Fighting, Fencing, and Youth Boffer. Our site also has showers.

Martial Activities

 

Armoured Combat

The armoured combat Marshal-In-Charge (MIC) will be Maistor Iustinos Tekton called Justin. Contact Justin if you have any questions regarding armoured combat at this year's Masque. We will be strictly checking photo ID, SCA membership, authorization card, and site token at the list table. The fighting is scheduled to be indoors, but we may move outdoors if the weather is exceptionally warm and nice (this does sometimes happen here in Ohio, even in February). Probably, therefore, there will be no combat archery or seige engines.

Tournament rules are preliminary and subject to change. Both the MIC and the List Mistresses are in their respective roles for the first time, so please pardon us if paperwork and other administrivia take a little longer. We'll do our best to keep things running smoothly.

Authorizations

We plan to have several Marshals on hand and will be pleased to offer authorizations in armoured combat. If you need to authorize, please try to arrive early (circa 9:30 a.m.), though we will try to work you in later (e.g., during lunch break) if you arrive after the tournaments have started.

Novice Tournament

The Novice Tourney is open to any authorized combatant who has never received an award at the Kingdom level for fighting prowess and who has never won a tournament at a published SCA event (shire-level and household tournaments not included). There is no strict limit on how long one has been authorized, but entrants are asked to consider, upon their own honor, whether they might be a veteran rather than a novice even though they might never have won a tourney or received a fighting award. We will not second-guess you on this, however — if you in good faith consider yourself a novice, that is sufficient for entry.

In keeping with its theme, the Novice Tourney is to be fought exclusively with single-handed weapon and shield, the basic authorization style. This will be a conventional double-elimination tourney, and the winner will receive a prize.

Variable and Vengeful Venetian Violence

The V4 tournament is open to any authorized fighter and allows any combat style or weapon permitted in the Middle Kingdom. This tournament is designed to be a real mixer-upper, with as much randomness in the pairings as possible — in keeping with the shifting intrigues and alliances of courtly life in Venice, of course!

In the V4 tourney, fighters are classified into one of three categories:

• Knights and Masters-At-Arms (Chivalry)
• Squires, and members of the Red Company or the Gold Mace (or other-kingdom equivalent fighting award or order)
• Everyone else

If you defeat someone at your own level or lower, you score 1 point. If you defeat someone at a higher level, you score 2 points. As a special case, if you entered the Novice Tournament and you defeat a member of the Chivalry in the V4 tourney, you receive 3 points.

All bouts are single-elimination, and partners will be chosen by random lot. The tourney lasts until the Marshals declare it ended (that is, when people seem to be getting tired or when we have to close the field to prepare for feast), or for one hour, whichever comes first. At the end of the tourney, the fighter with the most points will be declared the winner and will earn a prize.

The "Ladies of the List" will have a small number of discretionary points which they can hand out to fighters who catch their eye with deeds of valour or courtesy, or especially authentic or interesting armour or heraldry.

Pick-Up Fighting

Of course there will be pick-up fighting! Whatever time is left over at the end of the formal tournaments will be available for pick-up fighting, more authorizations, or ad hoc friendship tournaments (such as a bearpit or something similar).

Youth Combat

Due to space constraints, we probably won't be able to offer youth combat, unfortunately. If, however, the weather happens to be pleasant and if a Youth Marshal is in attendance at the event, there is outdoor space that youth combatants will be welcome to use. We are sorry that we can't schedule indoor youth combat; the available space just won't allow it.

The Strip

From the event site, go west on Portage (probably the way you came in) until you reach I-77. Proceed under I-77 and begin climbing the hill. A stoplight about 2/3 of the way up the hill takes you left (south) into the mall parking lot.

Westfield Shoppingtown (Belden Village)

Follow Portage west (probably the way you came in) from the event site back to I-77. Go south (left) on I-77 to the very next exit. As you reach the bottom of the ramp, there is a stoplight with Belden Village Mall directly ahead of you.

Heading west on Portage past I-77, there are also stores just over the hill.

Oaken Melee School V: War of Southern Aggression

The fifth annual Oaken Melee School will this year include the Brendoken Archery and Thrown Weapons Championships, and an inter-baronial contest of arms between the new Barony of Brendoken and the long-established Barony of Middle Marches.

Melee School V takes place July 16, 17, and 18 at the B&A Primitive Weapons Club in Roswell, Ohio.

From Whence Our Name?

Alderford is the name of our shire in Stark, Carroll, and Tuscarawas Counties in northeastern Ohio. The local area is known for its many streams and lowlands. In central Stark County, a tributary of the Tuscarawas River, Nimishillen Creek, has its headwaters in four streams. The name for this creek comes from the language of the original natives of this region. Nimishilla is the name of a shrub that the first European settlers called black alder. The plant grows in wet areas and along stream banks. The ni prefix had an association with water and streams. Nimishillen, as a proper name, has descended the creek reference and is, for example, the name of the township located centrally in terms of the Marche’s membership.


The black alder plant name is somewhat of a misnomer. There is a European tree with the same name. The European tree and the local shrub have the same common name due to a certain characteristic of their fall foliage: both plants berries turn black after autumn frost. The resemblance ends there. The European black alder is not indigenous to North America. The tree grows ninety feet tall; the shrub grows only a fraction of that height.

Another local name for black alder is winterberry. That name has another origin, that is, the plant’s distinctive berries that last throughout the winter. The berries are scarlet and are sometimes picked for use in Yule decorations.

The North American shrub is known correctly as Ilex verticillata. It is widespread, growing from the east coast to the Mississippi River in the United States. It seems to have been especially prevalent in our area. Black alder grows 3 feet to 15 feet (1 to 5 meters) tall. Its simple, alternate leaves are dull on top with coarse teeth and variously hairy on bottom. The leaves turn black after frost. The bright, round, red berries (1/4 inch [6 cm] diameter) persist after the leaves fall off. Varieties can be distinguished by the number of berries they have. Some are quite prolific; others have only small clusters at the junctures of leaf and branch.
