The Marche of Alderford is pleased to present "Masque of Courtly Love 9.1: A Medieval Science Fair" on February 18, 2006, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in North Canton, Ohio.
Relive the fun of a Science Fair, just like when you were a kid, but now for adults, too, and now combined with the fun of these Current Middle Ages
! Think up a creative project to demonstrate a principle or theory from medieval science—it needn't be "correct" by modern standards, as long as it's wrong in a period way. There will be categories for various skill levels and for different topics—and prizes for the winners!
If the Science Fair isn't your thing, have no fear. As in years past, we'll offer a whole range of activities, including:
Of course, no Masque would be complete unless we sent you home with a full belly, and so we are proud to feature a feast by our own THL Francesca de Onorati, followed by dancing to help work off all that food.
Fees for site and feast are based upon the age ranges of infants 0~4 years, children 5~12 years, and adults 13 years and up.
We are offering a family discount on site fee: All adults pay full fee, but only the first two children per immediate family are charged site fee. To further assist families in making this an affordable event
, we will offer a special "Children's Feast" at a reduced fee. The children's feast will be served at a separate table (but still in the main hall) and will consist of more "kid-friendly" items than the adults' period food. Children who like food from the Middle Ages are quite welcome at the main feast table, but all seats at the main tables are charged the adult fee.

"Will there be fighting at Masque?" You bet! All kinds of fighting! This year we are pleased to have armoured combat, rapier combat, and youth combat.
In addition to authorizations and ample time for pick-up fighting, the Masque of Courtly Love this year will feature a Trivia Tourney organized by Sgt. Einar. With each pass through the list, combatants will receive 3 points for a win against a knight, 2 points for all others, and a loss against anyone will get you 1 point. When reporting your points to the list table, you will have the chance to score additional points by answering a general knowledge trivia question. Answering the trivia question correctly will get you an additional 2 points, incorrectly will cost you nothing. Everyone must attempt to answer a question in order for their combat points to count. Questions will be selected from general Middle Kingdom, SCA
, or martial facts (i.e. "What is the name of our current Queen? What is the name of the piece of armor that covers the lower arm?").
The fencing list will be open for most of the day for tournaments and individual challenges.
Young warriors should bring their armour and weaponry, as we will be offering youth/boffer combat this year.
This schedule is subject to change up to and including the day of the event
.
Classrooms A and B can be joined together by opening an accordian partition between them. For empty time slots, rooms are potentially available to be reserved by the populace for officer meetings or similar purposes. Please contact the Autocrats if you wish to reserve a classroom.

[ Online Science Fair Pre-Registration ]
Our vision for the Science Fair is that it resembles a traditional school science fair, with two differences: it's for adults as well as youth, and the fair includes projects based on pre-1600 CE Western and Eastern civilization.
"Science" in the Middle Ages was intricately woven into religion, philosophy, culture, and myth, and wasn't necessarily the objective fact-finding that modern science at least pretends to be, even though it sometimes falls short. For example, a period-style demonstration of some scientific "fact" or principle that is *totally wrong* would be perfectly acceptable, as long as it is totally wrong in an historically accurate way. That does not mean the particular demonstration has to be documentable to period -- what we are after is the "feel" of period science, as authentic as we can make it, but still within the broader bounds of *Creative* Anachronism.
The emphasis of the fair is to have hands-on or at least be demonstrative exhibits, but papers and treatises can be presented in-persona to achieve that same quality and to involve the audience.
Participants must check in by 11 a.m.
Judges' meeting 11:30 a.m. -12 p.m.
Fair runs 12-4 p.m.
Judges' scoring session 4-5 p.m.
Adult (18+)
Youth (under 18)
Group Entry - Adult
Group Entry - Youth
Entries will be evaluated in the following areas:
, but will depend on space availability and the discretion of the fair coordinator.
Prizes will be awarded for Best in Show in adult and youth categories, Their Excellencies' choice, and Autocrat’s choice. Prizes will be given out during Court.
If you are registering a group entry, please provide the SCA and modern name of the primary contact person or group leader at the top of the form, then list other participants in the space provided below.
The contact information on this form will only be used for the Science Fair and will not be disclosed outside the SCA without your permission.
DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS FEBRUARY 11 Entries may be accepted after that date, or on the day of the event, at the discretion of the judges, but there is no guarantee of this. You do not have to have finished your project in order to register, so please register early if you are working on something.
The 2006 Masque of Courtly Love will feature numerous performances by talented artists.
This year's offerings will include:
There is a possibility of classroom reservations for small-sized "quiet" concerts (e.g. harp music) that don't lend themselves well to the larger venues. Contact our Autocrats to inquire about reserving a classroom for your concert.
